Throwback Thursday: 3.14.13

Luke Bryan came out with a new album this week, but I’m deliberately choosing to cling to his older material. Don’t get me wrong, Luke’s a great performer and I still enjoy some of his newer stuff, but I think in the midst of his “country girl shaking” and spring break shenanigans, he’s wandered away from heartfelt lyrics and a sincere country sound.

I love this song of Luke’s, released five years ago in 2007, because of the picture it paints about growing up with your friends. I don’t tend to miss high school itself, but this song makes me just a bit nostalgic for spending every waking moment with high school friends. It also reminds me of home, and seeing as how I’m home for spring break this week, I felt it was only appropriate for this week’s post.

The Band Perry’s “Better Dig Two” has been tearing up the airwaves lately. It seems every time I turn on the radio, it’s playing on one of the three country stations I listen to. Even before their newest hit, they were making an impact with “Postcard to Paris” and “If I Die Young,” among others.

So, in honor of their continuous rise up the charts, I thought we could look back on one of their earlier releases. I love the innocent, bubbly sound of this song. It definitely shows how much their sound has changed and matured in just two short years or so, but their energy certainly hasn’t faded away!

You can find the Band Perry’s debut album on iTunes here, and you can also find their latest single, “Better Dig Two,” here.

Lately I’ve heard a lot of Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn’s solo music, and I won’t lie, it’s made me miss hearing them as Brooks and Dunn. They were a power duo, and it’s easy to know why when you listen to their music.

I love this song in particular because I have fond memories associated with it. When I was 12 or 13, my uncle took me out on his boat on a lake in Tennessee, and this song was blasting on the radio. Ever since then, I’ve tied this song to that feeling of the wind in my hair, driving that boat at full speed as a mist sprayed my face and the mountains opened up before my eyes…

… I’d love to be on that boat again right now, but I suppose I’ll have to settle for the memories of it that this song brings back. Hopefully you’ll enjoy listening to this Brooks and Dunn classic as well!

This week has been nonstop madness for me, so I chose this song because I can truly relate to it! This is another one of those songs that I remember hearing countless times as a youngster, probably due in large part to the fact that my parents loved Alabama (and still do!). But I ain’t complainin’!

If you– like me– are “in a hurry to get things done” and you’ve been “rushin’ ’til life’s no fun” lately, take a few minutes to slow down and enjoy a classic Alabama song. I promise you won’t regret it!

When I’m in Athens, my radio is almost always on 106.1 WNGC simply because they not only play Nashville’s latest and greatest, but they also play a good amount of older music, including the 90s country I grew up listening to. I most definitely don’t have anything against current country hits, but there’s something about the sound of 90s country that I can’t get enough of. I think I’m partial to it because its sound is embedded in my soul… or at least in my childhood memories 🙂

Sammy Kershaw released this song the year I was born, and it’s one of those songs that’s been stored in my subconscious mind for heaven knows how many years because I quite literally grew up hearing it. I hadn’t heard it in quite a while until I moved to Athens last year, and now I hear it on the radio quite often. With that fiddle line and Sammy Kershaw’s distinctive voice, how could it not get stuck in my head from time to time? I can’t say that I mind it!

Well, CMA nominations have been announced, and because Blake Shelton is nominated for entertainer of the year, I thought it would be fun to reflect on the days in which his hair was long (and lovely…?). This song was released in 2001, so it really isn’t THAT old, but he looks quite young in the video. I love the sound of it, but I also appreciate this song from a songwriting perspective because the answering machine element is a cool, creative way to tell a story.

So, without further ado, let us all appreciate the music– and luscious locks, of course– of a young Mr. Shelton.

Alan Jackson’s version of “Pop a Top” is well-known among today’s generation of country fans, and before hearing Jim Ed Brown on the Opry, I didn’t know that Alan Jackson wasn’t the original singer of that song. Jim Ed Brown’s version peaked at number 3 on the Billboard chart in 1967 long before Alan Jackson’s version hit 32 years later.

Since we’re now in the year 2012, both versions can be considered a throwback! I hope you enjoy these two versions of a classic country song.

Did you know this song was released in 1999? It was. Did you also know that it’s still played on the radio? It’s true– I heard it just the other day. Talk about longevity. I personally think Keith Urban’s style is a lot better nowadays, but hey, he’s been playing good music all along, no matter what his appearance has been like. Go Keith!

Well, it’s been a while since I posted… oops. Since my last post I’ve moved into a new house and started my second year of college! Hopefully now things will settle into a routine and my appointed blogging times can finally be reinstated!

This song has been stuck in my head all week, so I wanted to share it. I really like 90s country– probably because I grew up listening to it. This video is also pretty humorous to watch… it was the 90s, after all!

Carrie Underwood released her latest music video for “Blown Away” earlier this week (watch it here), and it spawned me to look back on the early days of her incredible career as a country recording artist. Carrie’s music video for “Jesus Take the Wheel” was released in 2005, and I can’t believe it’s been seven years since she got her major start on Idol. Nowadays, she looks different, acts much more natural in front of a camera, and now has an air of maturity about her that we didn’t see in the girl crowned as American Idol’s season five winner. But despite those changes, she’ll never lose her graceful dignity. Or her soul-stirring voice, of course!
